[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] An inmate imprisoned on charges of sexual assault died by suicide.
On the 14th, Pohang CBS reported that A (27), who was confined in a solitary cell at Pohang Prison in Gyeongbuk, was found hanging by a prison staff member early in the morning. According to the report, a suicide note about 10 pages long on A4 paper was found in A's solitary cell.
The note reportedly contained A's claims of innocence regarding the sexual assault charges and expressed apologies to his parents, family, and girlfriend.
The bereaved family claims that although CCTV was installed in the solitary cell at the time, the prison failed to prevent the incident. A family representative said, "There are many suspicions such as negligence in managing the inmate, but the prison has not taken any special action," and added, "The truth must be revealed to clear the wrongful resentment."
Meanwhile, in 2016, a similar incident occurred where an inmate committed suicide at the same prison, but the prison was suspected of covering up the case by reporting it to the police a day after the incident.
