View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Gwan-joo] The Korea Road Traffic Authority and Daegu City signed a memorandum of understanding on the 14th for the "Development of Future Converged Transportation Infrastructure Technologies."
This agreement was established to cooperate in jointly demonstrating and commercializing the transportation infrastructure technologies that the Authority is researching and developing in preparation for the autonomous driving era with Daegu City. Daegu was selected as a regulatory sandbox district to support autonomous driving service demonstrations last November and is regarded as the city with the best autonomous driving testbed infrastructure nationwide.
According to the agreement, the two organizations will first build on-site infrastructure for real-time traffic signal information linkage at 30 intersections within the Daegu National Industrial Complex. Earlier in October, the Authority and Daegu City successfully completed a test in Suseong Alpha City that delivered real-time traffic signal information to autonomous vehicles. The traffic signal controller LTE modem installed at the intersections transmits traffic signal information to the Authority's Signal Hub Center, which then sends it to autonomous vehicles. The demonstration confirmed that the average delay time was within 0.1 seconds, allowing autonomous vehicles to safely navigate all traffic paths at the intersections using the received information.
The Authority plans to expand the same infrastructure to 30 locations throughout Daegu City and complete construction within this year, expecting LTE-based information openness to be possible from next year. Daegu City plans to establish the same system at intersections throughout the city to provide real-time traffic signal information services to both general drivers and autonomous vehicles.
