Lee Nak-yeon: "This National Assembly Achieved the Biggest and Most Numerous Reforms Since the 1987 Democratization"
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] Lee Nak-yeon, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, stated on the 11th during the National Assembly plenary session, regarding the passage of several reform bills including the amendment to the High-ranking Officials' Crime Investigation Office (HCIO) Act, “This National Assembly has achieved the largest and most numerous reforms since the democratization of 1987.”

View original imageAt the Supreme Council meeting held at the National Assembly that morning, Lee said, “We legislated reforms across various fields such as politics, economy, and society in South Korea all at once.”
Regarding the HCIO Act passed in the plenary session the previous day, he expressed gratitude, saying, “I thank the citizens who encouraged the amendment of the law through various means including SNS and even online candlelight protests,” and added, “Now, we will promptly launch the HCIO to create a clean and responsible high-ranking public official society.”
He continued, “We will conclude the three power institution reform laws including the HCIO Act and the Police Act by also processing the amendment to the National Intelligence Service Act, which faced a filibuster by the opposition party,” and evaluated, “Along with the reform of power institutions, it is historic that the National Assembly passed laws for livelihood economic recovery, establishment of a fair economic order, strengthening of social safety nets, expansion of workers’ rights, decentralization of local government, and investigation of the truth behind the May 18 Gwangju Democratization Movement and the Sewol ferry disaster.” He added, “We will advance beyond institutionalizing reforms to solidifying and internalizing them.”

Lee also said, “We will actively promote the legislation of unfinished tasks among the Moon Jae-in administration’s national agenda,” and requested, “The Policy Committee should quickly establish a plan and begin implementation together with the floor leaders.”
