Jangseong-gun Selected for Multiple Fruit Tree-Related Public and Pilot Projects for Next Year
[Jangseong=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Jo Hangyu] Jangseong-gun, Jeollanam-do (Governor Yoo Doo-seok) announced on the 9th that it has secured 1.5 billion KRW in project funds by being consecutively selected for the 2021 fruit-related public offering and pilot projects conducted by the Rural Development Administration and the Jeonnam Agricultural Research and Extension Services.
The county plans to cultivate exotic fruits such as Rubies and Passion Fruit to capture the rapidly changing consumer market.
The county was selected for next year's public offering projects: the "Fruit Production Complex Development Project Reflecting Changes in Consumer Trends" and the "New Income Subtropical Crop Complex Development Project."
The "Fruit Production Complex Development Project Reflecting Changes in Consumer Trends" is a project that reflects changing agricultural product consumption tendencies, such as the increase in single-person households and the preference for fruits that can be eaten with the peel.
Through this project, the county plans to develop small and medium-sized apple varieties such as Rubies, Peak Pick, and Arisu.
The county is the largest apple-producing area in Jeonnam, with over 80% of the 220 hectares of cultivation area planted with the Fuji variety, and the harvest period concentrated last month, making securing labor and price competitiveness critical.
It is expected that introducing small and medium-sized apple varieties will help resolve this by distributing the harvest period more evenly.
The "New Income Subtropical Crop Complex Development Project" is a project to domesticize subtropical fruits preferred by consumers and create income for farmers.
The county selected Passion Fruit (Baekhyanggwa), which can be cultivated at temperatures above 5℃ and allows for reduced production costs such as heating expenses, as the main crop and will begin full-scale complex development from next year.
Passion Fruit is a subtropical crop widely loved as a premium dessert fruit, containing seven times more vitamin C than pomegranates, and is rich in niacin, estrogen, and potassium, earning it the nickname "Fruit of the Goddess."
Additionally, the county was selected for the "Abnormal Weather Response Orchard Damage Prevention Technology Diffusion Pilot Project" and the "Cost Reduction Pilot Project for Facility Fruit Trees Using Underground Cooling and Heating," and plans to provide technical support to minimize farmer damage from natural disasters such as heavy rains and reduce management costs.
