Transportation Industry Revenue Reaches 152 Trillion Won Last Year... 5 Consecutive Years of Growth
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Kim Hyunjung] Last year, the transportation industry recorded sales of 152 trillion won, continuing an increase for five consecutive years compared to the previous year. This was due to growth in courier services, international freight transportation, and other sectors, with the number of companies and employees also rising accordingly.
According to the '2019 Transportation Industry Survey Results (Preliminary)' announced by Statistics Korea on the 8th, last year's transportation industry sales amounted to 152 trillion won, a 3.5% increase from the previous year. Transportation industry sales had decreased for two consecutive years, with -0.9% in 2013 and -0.1% in 2014, but rebounded by 0.5% in 2015, marking a turnaround after three years, and continued to increase for five consecutive years until last year. Compared to the previous year, land transportation increased by 3.6%, water transportation by 3.1%, and warehousing and transportation services by 7.1%, while air transportation decreased by 0.7%.
The number of employees also rose by 1.7% to 1,154,000. By sector, land transportation accounted for 959,000 employees (83.1%), warehousing and transportation services 127,000 (11.0%), air transportation 43,000 (3.7%), and water transportation 25,000 (2.2%). The number of employees increased in land transportation (2.1%), water transportation (3.8%), and air transportation (6.9%) compared to the previous year, while warehousing and transportation services decreased by 3.3%.
The number of transportation companies reached 393,000, a 2.3% increase from the previous year. By sector, land transportation had 371,745 companies (94.7%), warehousing and transportation services 20,119 (5.1%), water transportation 592 (0.2%), and air transportation 44 (0.01%). Compared to the previous year, the number of companies increased in land transportation (2.4%), water transportation (1.5%), and air transportation (7.3%), while warehousing and transportation services decreased by 0.6%.
Operating expenses in the transportation industry amounted to 139.5 trillion won, a 3.7% increase from the previous year. By sector, land transportation accounted for 61.5 trillion won (44.1%), water transportation 28 trillion won (20.1%), warehousing and transportation services 25.6 trillion won (18.3%), and air transportation 24.4 trillion won (17.5%).

The average number of employees per corporate company was 39.7, an increase of 7.0% (2.6 employees) from the previous year, and sales per company were 7.53 billion won, up 7.3% (510 million won).
