2 out of 3 Koreans Say "I Want to Travel Abroad Next Year"
Survey Results from 1,800 Tmon Customers
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Cheol-hyun] TMON (CEO Lee Jin-won) announced on the 2nd that, according to a survey conducted among customers, 64%, or two out of three people, said they want to travel abroad next year. Respondents preferred to travel 'with family (52%)' and for 'more than 5 days (78%)'.
The survey was conducted over five days starting November 23, after news of the development of a COVID-19 vaccine was announced, with a total of 1,800 respondents. Among them, 57% said they would travel abroad after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine next year, and 7% said they would go immediately if there were travel destinations where vaccination was not required, making a total of 64% hoping to travel abroad.
The desire to travel abroad with family was also strong. More than half (52%) chose family as the people they want to travel with, followed by friends (20%) and lovers (15%). Those who answered they would travel alone accounted for 12%. The most desired activity during overseas travel was visiting cultural heritage sites and tourist attractions (44%), followed by wanting to rest comfortably (22%) and visiting local restaurants and pubs (20%).
Since overseas travel was virtually impossible this year, a compensatory psychology seems to be reflected. Those who said they would travel abroad for more than 5 days accounted for 78%, followed by 4 days (15%) and 3 days (6%). Also, as the COVID-19 situation prolonged, preferred travel destinations changed. In the survey conducted last June, Southeast Asia ranked first with 60.5%, but in this survey, it dropped to 27%. Instead, long-distance travel responses increased by an average of 5 percentage points, with Europe (21%), Oceania (15%), and the Americas (11%) following. Accordingly, the travel budget per person was mostly between 1 million and 2 million KRW, accounting for 46%.
