Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Donald Trump, and Others Also Join
The groups BTS and BLACKPINK have been included as nominees for Time magazine's annual 'Person of the Year.' Time began online voting for the 'Person of the Year' candidates, including these groups, starting on the 25th (local time).
Both groups have significantly elevated the status and popularity of K-pop this year. BTS solidified their position as top artists in the pop market by achieving global success with their album "Map of the Soul: 7" and topping the Billboard main singles chart with their single "Dynamite." On the 24th, they became the first Korean popular music artists to be nominated for the Grammy Awards, competing in the "Best Pop Duo/Group Performance" category. If they win, they will achieve a "Grand Slam." Previously, they won the Billboard Music Awards for four consecutive years and the American Music Awards for three consecutive years, both considered among the top three music award shows in the U.S.
BLACKPINK, although not nominated for the Grammy Awards' Best New Artist, has recently made remarkable progress. They have consecutively broken K-pop girl group records with singles like "How You Like That" and "Ice Cream." Their first full-length album, "The Album," debuted at number 2 on the Billboard 200 main album chart, and their collaboration with Selena Gomez on "Ice Cream" reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. The music video for "DDU-DU DDU-DU" also surpassed 1.4 billion views on YouTube, marking the first time a K-pop group has achieved this milestone, demonstrating their global popularity.
In addition to these groups, Time included other nominees such as Kamala Harris, the first Black and female Vice President-elect in U.S. history, and Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), who opposed President Donald Trump during the U.S. response to the COVID-19 pandemic. President-elect Joe Biden and President Trump are also among the nominees. The results will be announced on the 10th of next month. Last year's Person of the Year was Swedish teenage environmental activist Greta Thunberg.
