[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A man and woman in their 20s who placed a newborn baby in a toilet and left the child unattended, resulting in the baby's death, have admitted to all charges. They also confessed to attempting to burn the body before burying it.
On the 19th, the Daejeon District Court Criminal Division 5 (Judge Park Jun-beom) held the first trial for A (27, female) and B (22), who were arrested and indicted on charges of infanticide and corpse abandonment.
According to the prosecution, A gave birth to her daughter in a bathroom toilet last June and deliberately left her unattended, causing the baby to die.
After the baby stopped breathing, A called the baby's father, B, to conspire in the crime and abandoned the body near B's house in Gapyeong, Gyeonggi Province.
They also attempted to burn the deceased baby before abandoning the body but failed, ultimately digging a hole to bury it.
They admitted to all their charges on the day of the trial.
The prosecution stated, "The crime is very serious as they not only killed the baby but also tried to burn the body," but added, "The defendants are still young and have no prior criminal records." They requested the court to sentence A to five years in prison with a five-year ban on employment in child-related institutions, and B to three years in prison.
A's lawyer pleaded for leniency, saying, "A was the one who suffered and was in the most pain." He added, "The family also regrets not being able to care for A, knowing her difficult situation in advance."
B's lawyer appealed, "B was born in Mongolia and came to Korea at the age of nine. Having recently acquired Korean citizenship, he does not yet fully understand Korean society and culture," and asked the court to consider that "he is still young and sincerely remorseful."
The court stated, "Considering various circumstances, the fact that they tried to burn the baby's body shows the crime is very serious. The baby kept crying in the toilet and eventually died. Even if an animal fell into the toilet, one would want to save it."
