UN General Assembly Third Committee Adopts North Korea Human Rights Resolution by Consensus... 16 Consecutive Years
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced that the North Korea human rights resolution was adopted by consensus without a vote on the 18th (local time) at the Third Committee of the 75th United Nations General Assembly. The resolution, adopted for 16 consecutive years since 2005, is scheduled to be submitted to the plenary session of the UN General Assembly in December.
Under the basic stance of working together with the international community to ensure the practical improvement of human rights for North Korean residents, the government participated in the consensus adoption of the resolution this year as well, as it did last year. Compared to last year's resolution at the 74th UN General Assembly, the current resolution largely maintains the existing wording regarding the North Korean human rights situation, with some clauses newly added or revised.
The resolution expressed concern about the negative impact of COVID-19 on North Korea's human rights and humanitarian situation related to the novel coronavirus pandemic and emphasized the need for restrictions in response to COVID-19 to be consistent with international human rights law.
