View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Bong-ju] Amid nationwide outrage over the death of a 16-month-old girl in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, under suspicions of abuse in her adoptive family, photos showing the child before and after adoption have been released.
According to news agencies including Newsis on the 17th, the Child Abuse Prevention Association and others disclosed photos and videos of the deceased girl, A, taken while she was in a foster family before being sent to the adoptive family.
In these videos and photos, A is seen in the foster family with clear, bright skin and a radiant smile, like other children.
However, after being sent to the adoptive family, A’s limbs showed noticeably darkened skin, and bruises were found on various parts of her body.
A foster mother who cared for A before adoption said the day before, "A was pretty with clear skin, but the images shown on the broadcast had black bruises," adding, "(A) was not that dark."
The foster mother also said, "The adoptive father claimed that the bruises came from massaging A’s legs because they were bowed, but her legs were not bowed," and added, "It breaks my heart to think that a beautiful and healthy child was tormented for nine months."
Earlier, on the 13th of last month, A was brought to a hospital in Mok-dong, Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, covered in bruises all over her body but eventually died. Large wounds were found on her abdomen and head, and a hospital official who saw this suspected child abuse and reported it to the police, bringing the case to public attention.
However, it is known that reports of suspected child abuse had been made three times in the past. The adoptive parents of A were subjected to a police confrontation investigation on September 23 due to child abuse suspicions. However, the police did not find any specific evidence of abuse against them.
A’s adoptive mother was arrested on the 11th on charges including child abuse resulting in death.
Meanwhile, voices criticizing the police for 'inadequate investigation' and demanding strict punishment for the parents are growing, led by the Korea Child Abuse Prevention Association and others.
