High Proportion of Single-Homeowners but Multi-Homeowners Increasing Sharply
[Sejong=Asia Economy Reporter Joo Sang-don] It was revealed that the number of multi-homeowners increased by more than 90,000 last year. Despite various government regulations, the number actually rose.
According to the '2019 Housing Ownership Statistics' released by Statistics Korea on the 17th, the total number of housing units as of November 1 last year was 18.127 million. Among these, 15.689 million units, or 86.5% of the total, were owned by individuals.
Among individually owned housing units, apartments accounted for 59.8%, totaling 9.378 million units. This is an increase of 347,000 units (3.8%) compared to 9.031 million units in 2018.
While the proportion of single-homeowners remains high, the growth rate of multi-homeowners was steeper. There were 12.052 million single-homeowners and 2.284 million multi-homeowners owning two or more homes.
As of last year, the number of multi-homeowners was 2.284 million, an increase of 92,000 from one year earlier (2.192 million). Considering that multi-homeowners increased by 73,000 from 2017 to 2018, the growth rate has accelerated.
There were 293,000 multi-homeowners owning three or more homes, 76,000 owning four or more, and 118,000 owning five or more. Including these, the proportion of multi-homeowners owning two or more homes as of 2019 was 15.9%, up 0.3 percentage points from the previous year.

The proportion of homeowners residing within the same city or province as their housing was 86.5%, similar to the previous year. The proportion of non-residents (those living in other cities or provinces) owning housing was 13.5%. Notably, the proportion of non-resident ownership in Seoul increased by 0.5 percentage points from 14.9% in 2018 to 15.4% last year. Among non-resident homeowners, the most common residence areas were Goyang-si, Gyeonggi Province at 6.8%, followed by Yongin-si, Gyeonggi Province at 6.5%, and Seongnam-si, Gyeonggi Province at 6.2%.
