[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] A recent poll revealed that in Seoul, where a by-election will be held in April next year, the support rates for the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party were tied. In Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (PK), the Democratic Party was ahead of the People Power Party.
According to a poll conducted by Realmeter on behalf of YTN from the 9th to the 13th, the Democratic Party's support rate dropped by 1.9 percentage points from the previous week to 32.8%, while the People Power Party's support rate decreased by 0.7 percentage points to 27.3%, as announced on the 16th. The Open Democratic Party followed with 7.5%, the People’s Party with 7.2%, and the Justice Party with 5.7%.
Notably, in Seoul, considered a key battleground for the April by-election, both the Democratic Party and the People Power Party recorded support rates of 30%, resulting in a tie. The Democratic Party's support fell by 0.6 percentage points from the previous week, while the People Power Party's support dropped by 2.2 percentage points. Although both parties experienced declines, the People Power Party's decrease was larger.
In another by-election region, PK, the Democratic Party recorded 30.1%, surpassing the People Power Party's 29.3%. The Democratic Party's support rose by 0.6 percentage points, whereas the People Power Party's support fell by 4.9 percentage points. This is interpreted as being influenced by the Democratic Party's active efforts toward the construction of the Gadeokdo New Airport.
President Moon Jae-in's approval rating for his administration was recorded at 44.3%, down 0.1 percentage points from the previous week. The disapproval rating rose by 0.8 percentage points to 51%.
