BMW Unveils Next-Generation Electric SUV 'iX'
Maximum Output Over 500 Horsepower
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] BMW unveiled the next-generation electric sports utility vehicle (SUV) iX for the first time through the '2020 NextGen,' which reveals the group's future strategy, on the 11th (local time).
Scheduled for release at the end of next year, the BMW iX is currently in the final stages of development. The BMW iX features 5th generation eDrive technology encompassing two electric motors, electronic components, and a high-voltage battery. The maximum output is expected to exceed 500 horsepower, and the time required to accelerate from a standstill to 100 km/h is anticipated to be under 5 seconds.
Not only driving performance but also electricity consumption is low. According to WLTP test standards, the integrated electricity consumption is below 21 kWh per 100 km. BMW explains that this is an unusually low figure within this segment. The latest high-voltage battery secures a driving range exceeding 600 km based on WLTP standards through a capacity of over 100 kWh.
Using a 200 kW DC fast charger, it takes less than 40 minutes to charge the BMW iX from 10% to 80%. Using a fast charging station, a 10-minute charge allows driving for more than 120 km.
The interior of the BMW iX reflects the concept of ‘Shy Tech.’ Shy Tech is a technology where various advanced functions operate in the background during normal times and only appear when the user intends to use the functions. Displays and controls have all disappeared except for essential parts. Speakers invisibly installed inside the interior materials, thinly designed air vents, and a head-up display projector hidden in the corner of the instrument cluster are results of design considering the Shy Tech concept. Additionally, the BMW Curved Display is supported by a stand invisible to passengers, designed to give the impression of floating in the air.
