Zero Waste Campaign 'Your Bottle Week 2020' Held Throughout November
Bottle Factory Co., Ltd. "A Daily Life Filled Without Waste"
[Culture & Life Reporter Choi Jeonghwa] Bottle Factory Co., Ltd. is conducting the 3rd Your Bottle Week until the 30th, focusing on the Seodaemun-gu and Mapo-gu areas. To prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the campaign period, usually held from summer to early autumn, has been postponed, and the number of program participants will be reduced compared to previous years while adhering to quarantine guidelines.
Following the slogans “A Week Without Disposable Products” in 2018 and “Change Starting in Our Neighborhood” in 2019, the slogan for 2020 is “A Daily Life Filled Without Waste.” Your Bottle Week is a community-based festival where Bottle Factory Co., Ltd., which operates a disposable-free cafe in Yeonhui-dong, shares the know-how accumulated with local residents to promote zero-waste culture and experiences.
Zero waste is a lifestyle aimed at reducing the amount of waste generated in daily life by focusing on reducing the use of disposable products and reusing resources. As the COVID-19 pandemic prolongs, many people acknowledge the environmental impact but accept the use of disposable products as inevitable to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Bottle Factory Co., Ltd. questions whether disposable products are indeed safer than reusable ones and proposes creating healthy alternatives together in our neighborhoods.
First Proposal, Zero Club: Buying Food by Bringing Your Own Container Without Plastic or Vinyl Packaging
Zero waste becomes meaningful when producers and consumers positively influence and change each other. If you live or mainly operate around Seodaemun-gu and Mapo-gu, join Your Bottle Week to reduce waste output and live an eco-friendly life. Centered around Cafe Bottle Factory in Yeonhui-dong, about 50 local stores including markets, bakeries, cafes, rice cake shops, mills, snack bars, side dish shops, and restaurants welcome those dreaming of transitioning to an eco-friendly daily life. By bringing your own side dish containers, tumblers, etc., and visiting participating Your Bottle Week stores, you can purchase ingredients and food in your personal containers instead of vinyl or disposable packaging. Using the ZERO CLUB application, you can check the list, locations, and available items of participating stores, and earn points each time you purchase without disposable products. You can also view your zero-waste ranking and records of reduced disposable product use among participants. The application is available for download on both the App Store and Google Play Store.
Lock&Lock, a comprehensive household goods company that cares about the environment and people, has supported the campaign for two consecutive years. This year, they specially support the event’s core supporters, the 50 “Lock&Lockers,” by providing a package of five products including various sizes of airtight containers and cleaning brushes that are convenient and attractive to use, endorsing the campaign’s purpose. Stories of zero-waste practices making full use of Lock&Lock products can be read by searching for Lock&Locker on Instagram.
Second Activity, Various Cultural and Artistic Programs Experiencing Zero Waste
In addition to using reusable containers at stores, starting November 7, there will be a “Filling Market” event for unpackaged shopping without disposable products, followed by a month-long series of events including a documentary screening of “Sweet Plastic Empire” with film critic Jeong Ji-hye, workshops on making wooden chopsticks, nature weaving, natural dyeing using discarded materials, and talk salons reflecting on the hidden side of disposable product use and its connection to our daily lives and the environment. Participating in these cultural programs and experimenting with zero-waste daily life like playing house makes it easy to continue practicing zero waste naturally even after the campaign ends, which is the charm of Your Bottle Week.

Third Proposal, Bottle Club: Takeout Shared Cup Rental & Return Service Between Cafes
Participating cafes will operate the Bottle Club service, sharing takeout cups for a total of three months until January 2021, even after the campaign ends. By joining the Bottle Club, if you don’t have a personal tumbler, you can rent a shared Bottle Club cup and return it to any participating cafe. Those who enjoy takeout drinks can refer to the list of participating cafes to enjoy beverages from various neighborhood cafes in an eco-friendly, more convenient, and fun way than usual. Detailed information about campaign participation and zero-waste cultural program applications can be found on the official Your Bottle Week Instagram account.
