Hosted by Jeju Special Self-Governing Province and jointly organized by Jeju International Convention Center (ICC JEJU), Happiness Jeju, and the Jeju International Aroma Fair Organizing Committee, the Jeju International Aroma Fair took place on the 6th and 7th both in the Saryeoni Forest and online.
On the 6th, the Aroma Fair publicly shared a discussion by experts online under the theme "Exploring Aromatic Approaches from Jeju's Plant Resources." Participants included Ko Eun-joo, Chairperson of the Jeju International Aroma Fair Organizing Committee; Lee Beom-cheon, Director of Hu&Skin Research Institute; Kim Hee-sook, Professor at Catholic Kwandong University; and Lee Eun-jin, International Aromatherapist.
They focused on the issue that although research on materializing plant resources in Jeju is actively conducted, most of it is limited to cosmetic materials. Despite Jeju's diverse plant resources, they pointed out that the production volume is far too insufficient for commercial use, posing limitations in connecting to other industries.
Furthermore, they suggested that due to the nature of the cosmetics industry, which struggles to survive long in the market, it would be more efficient to foster new industries utilizing Jeju's plant resources. In particular, they emphasized that extracting aroma oils from plant resources or cultivating herbs and linking these to the tourism industry could be another approach to Jeju's plant resources.
An online lecture titled "Efficacy of Natural Herbs and Prospects of Jeju Herb Industry" was also released that day. Lee Eun-jin, the international aromatherapist who gave the lecture, explained the effects according to the parts of plants from which aroma oils are extracted. She also introduced cases of countries linking herb cultivation with the tourism industry and examples of creating high added value through herbs.
