‘Custom Shoes Korea Contest’ Grand Prize to Cha Seungjun and Other Awards
Students majoring in Product Design Engineering in the Department of Design Engineering at the College of IT Convergence Components and Materials Engineering, Dong-Eui University, who won the grand prize at the Korea Footwear Design Competition.
View original image[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-woo] Students from the Product Design Engineering major (Head Professor Park Kwang-chul) in the Department of Design Engineering, College of IT Convergence Components and Materials Engineering at Dong-Eui University (President Han Soo-hwan) swept two domestic shoe design competitions hosted by the Busan Economic Promotion Agency’s Shoe Industry Promotion Center.
Dong-Eui University’s Product Design Engineering major announced that on October 30th, at the award ceremony held in the multipurpose hall on the 2nd floor of BEXCO in Busan for the ‘6th 2020 Korea Shoe Design Competition’ and the ‘3rd 2020 Custom Shoes Korea Contest,’ students Park Dae-hwi and Cha Seung-jun each won grand prizes, among multiple student awards.
In the ‘2020 Korea Shoe Design Competition,’ Dong-Eui University’s Park Dae-hwi won the grand prize, the Busan Mayor’s Award, and a prize of 3 million KRW for his design titled ‘EASY MAGNETIC SYSTEM.’ Meanwhile, Dong-Eui University’s Cha Seung-jun received the gold prize, the Busan Economic Promotion Agency Director’s Award, and a prize of 2 million KRW for his design ‘OSRO-One Lace System Running shoe.’
Additionally, Kim Se-yoon won the Excellence Award (Korea Institute of Design Promotion Award) and 700,000 KRW, Park Dae-hwi received the Sponsor Company Award (WinedWire) and 500,000 KRW, and Park Mi-rim, Kim Hyun-ah, and Lim Hye-min each won Encouragement Awards with 300,000 KRW.
Jang Yoon-jung, Nam Geon-woo, Lee Joo-won, and Heo Ji-seon received special selections, while Hyun Hye-soo, Jung Jae-wook, Kim Ji-i, Lee Soo-yeon, Jang Da-jung, Kim Hye-bin, Jung Na-hyun, and Jung Da-yeon were selected as honorable mentions.
Grand prize winner Park Dae-hwi’s design replaces shoelaces with neodymium, a super-strong magnet, to secure the shoe. The native brand Prospex’s ‘F’ logo is visually shaped to resemble a handshake between North and South Korea, effectively conveying a Korean aesthetic.
Park Dae-hwi said, “Since middle school, I have been interested in shoes and their style, so I enrolled at Dong-Eui University to continuously study shoe design. I plan to pursue a career in product design in the sneaker field.”
This Korea Shoe Design Competition attracted a total of 450 entries from domestic and international university students and youth from countries including the UK, USA, China, Russia, and Africa.
In the ‘2020 Custom Shoes Korea Contest,’ Dong-Eui University’s Cha Seung-jun won the grand prize and 2 million KRW.
Cha won awards in both competitions, following his gold prize in the Korea Shoe Design Competition.
Dong-Eui University’s Park Mi-rim won the Excellence Award and 500,000 KRW, and Kim Hye-bin received a special selection. This contest was open to anyone active in the shoe customization industry, design students, and hobbyists, with 120 entries submitted.
Grand prize winner Cha Seung-jun presented a custom shoe called ‘Obangryong,’ which incorporates the image of a dragon to highlight Korean beauty.
Cha said, “What started as a fun hobby in shoe customization became a field I understood and found direction in through custom classes held this year at the Korea Shoe Museum and guidance from Professors Park Kwang-chul and Lee Dong-ryeol, allowing my individuality to shine through.”

Park Kwang-chul, head professor of the Product Design Engineering major at Dong-Eui University, said, “Dong-Eui University, through the LINC+ project group, has established a model that produces results in product development and student employment via industry-academia cooperation with LS Networks. Through educational programs such as capstone design and maker special lectures, students gain field experience and practical skills. Practical education linked with family companies and partner firms is yielding significant outcomes.”
