View original image[Asia Economy Yang Nak-gyu, Military Specialist Reporter] Attention is focused on whether Pungsan, a domestic defense company, can once again serve as a bridge in the South Korea-US diplomatic and security lines. Chairman Ryu Jin of Pungsan has built strong personal connections with the US diplomatic and security circles, raising expectations that even if Democratic candidate Joe Biden wins, he can continue to link South Korea-US diplomacy and security.
According to foreign media on the 9th, the Biden transition team is expected to devote great effort to appointing the three key pillars leading the US government's foreign and security policies: the Secretary of State, who ranks first in the US cabinet, the White House National Security Advisor, the 'commander-in-chief of security,' and the Secretary of Defense. The new US administration's diplomatic and security line is attracting attention as it represents the first step in setting a new framework for South Korea-North Korea-US relations related to the Korean Peninsula peace process and denuclearization negotiations.
Chairman Ryu has maintained connections with the US diplomatic and security circles behind the scenes. His network in the US dates back to the Bush family. Ryu first met the 41st US President George H. W. Bush in 1992. When Bush Sr. visited Korea, he began a relationship with Ryu's late father, Ryu Chan-woo, the founder and chairman of the Defense Industry Promotion Association. At that time, Ryu, serving as an executive at Pungsan, requested former President Bush's attendance at the inauguration ceremony of PMX Industry, a US local corporation producing new wire rods, and the exchange officially began when Bush sent Mrs. Barbara Bush.
He also has ties with Condoleezza Rice, former Secretary of State and a key figure in the diplomatic and security line during George W. Bush's presidency. In April 2014, Rice visited Pungsan High School in Andong, Gyeongbuk, at Chairman Ryu's invitation to give a special lecture. The event was held privately, and Rice refused photography, citing that her visit to Korea was purely a 'personal schedule.' In 2005, former President George H. W. Bush and his wife visited Pungsan High School. Subsequently, in 2009, the 43rd President George W. Bush and his brother Jeb Bush, former Governor of Florida, visited in turn and gave special lectures. Last year, former President George W. Bush personally delivered a portrait he painted of the late President Roh Moo-hyun to Chairman Ryu as a tribute.
Chairman Ryu is also known to have close ties with Republican figures such as former Defense Secretaries Robert Gates and Leon Panetta. He translated and published the Korean edition of the autobiography of former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Colin Powell, introduced to him by the Bush family. As the head of a defense company exporting ammunition to the US, he had many opportunities to build friendships not only with US political and business figures but also with military staff. This is why there is speculation in the domestic industry that his network extends broadly across both Republican and Democratic circles.
