Among 38 Multi-Homeholding National Assembly Members, 22 Sell Houses... Lee Nak-yeon Warns "Disadvantage in Nomination if Uncooperative"
[Asia Economy Reporter Wondara] Among the 38 multi-homeholding members of the National Assembly affiliated with the Democratic Party of Korea, 22 have disposed of non-primary residences. This comes about a month after Democratic Party leader Lee Nak-yeon instructed the Ethics Inspection Team on September 29 at the Supreme Council meeting to "conduct an investigation into multi-home ownership among elected officials, including party-affiliated members of the National Assembly."
The Democratic Party Ethics Inspection Team announced on the 4th through a press release titled "Status of Multi-Home Resolution" that "Out of 174 party-affiliated members of the National Assembly, 38 were identified as multi-home owners, and since the start of the full investigation, 22 members have resolved their multi-home status as of the 31st of last month."
They added, "The remaining 16 members are unable to dispose of their properties due to reasons such as 'residence by parents or other family members,' 'farmhouses located in rural areas,' and 'shared ownership of hometown houses inherited jointly.' Some have not yet found buyers and thus have not completed disposal. Nevertheless, almost all are proceeding with the goal of resolving multi-home ownership within this year."
The Ethics Inspection Team also stated regarding the 12 party-affiliated metropolitan local government heads, "Among them, two multi-home owners have unavoidable reasons, but they are also pushing for swift disposal," and explained, "The party has recommended resolving multi-home ownership by the first quarter of next year (by the end of March) at the latest."
The Ethics Inspection Team is conducting a full investigation into the status of multi-home ownership among 154 party-affiliated basic local government heads, 643 metropolitan council members, and 1,598 basic council members. They are also recommending resolution of multi-home ownership by the first quarter of next year for these groups.
Choi Ki-sang, head of the Ethics Inspection Team, said, "The party leader has sent letters to multi-homeholding members of the National Assembly and metropolitan local government heads to request cooperation again, and for some subjects for whom disposal seems practically difficult, discussions are ongoing regarding whether and how to dispose of the properties."

Leader Lee emphasized, "We will align the disposal of multi-home properties with the public’s expectations and demonstrate a responsible stance as the ruling party," and added, "If speculative housing ownership is confirmed or if there is no cooperation without justifiable reasons regarding the party’s recommendation to resolve multi-home ownership, we plan to respond firmly, including disadvantaging such individuals in future public office candidate nominations."
