Austrian Prosecutors: Terror Suspect Is IS Sympathizer... Death Toll Rises to 5
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] Regarding the terrorist incident that occurred on the 2nd (local time) in Vienna, Austria, the investigative authorities revealed that the perpetrator was a supporter of the extremist armed group Islamic State (IS). Since the press conference, the death toll has risen to 5.
According to the local public broadcaster ORF, Karl Nehammer, Austria's Minister of the Interior, stated at a press conference on the 3rd, "The suspect shot dead by the police was affiliated with IS." Local police reported that three civilians died at the scene and 15 people, including police officers, were injured. It was later reported that a fourth civilian who was shot also died. The attack began on a street in Vienna where a Jewish synagogue is located, but the motive for the crime is still unknown. Oscar Deutsch, representative of the Vienna Jewish community, stated on Twitter, "Although the shooting occurred near a Jewish synagogue, it is uncertain whether the synagogue was the target since it was closed at the time."
