President Moon: "Carbon Neutrality, an Essential Task for Our Economic Growth"
Presiding over the Blue House Cabinet Meeting, Emphasizing the Need for 'Carbon Neutrality'... "Responding to the Climate Crisis is Essential for Human Survival"
President Moon Jae-in presided over the 55th Cabinet meeting at the Blue House on the 3rd and stated, "Carbon neutrality is an essential task to maintain the growth of our economy," adding, "Major countries such as the European Union (EU) are raising environmental regulations and barriers, so companies must move toward an eco-friendly and low-carbon economy to survive."
President Moon emphasized the necessity of carbon neutrality policies, saying, "Responding to the climate crisis is not a choice but a necessity. It is a path we must take for the survival of humanity and the future of the Republic of Korea."
He added, "Carbon neutrality is the direction the world must move together to jointly respond to the climate crisis," and "Countries around the world are declaring carbon neutrality as an unavoidable choice for a sustainable Earth."
The Moon Jae-in administration's 'carbon neutrality' initiative is said to be a global trend. The European Union (EU) plans to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, China by 2060, and Japan by 2050.
President Moon explained, "We too must actively participate in the global trend as a responsible member of the international community," adding, "In my address to the National Assembly, I made a solemn promise to pursue carbon neutrality by 2050. It is a declaration recognizing the gravity of the climate crisis and committing to necessary responses and actions."
President Moon pledged policy efforts to realize carbon neutrality, including industrial structure transformation. He stated, "We must strengthen multifaceted support to transition to a low-carbon industrial structure and strongly back the development of innovative decarbonization technologies and alternative fuels in the industrial sector."
He urged, "In particular, I ask that various measures be devised to accelerate the energy transition, including decarbonization, activation of the hydrogen economy, and expansion of the share of renewable energy."
President Moon diagnosed that, considering the domestic reality of an industry structure centered on manufacturing, this is a challenging task. He said, "If it is unavoidable, rather than being led by regulations, we need to boldly take on the challenge with a proactive and active attitude, driving innovation across all areas of our society and accelerating the transition to a low-carbon society."
He added, "To achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, a strong foundation for implementation must be established. Since it is a national strategy that can yield results only when promoted accordingly, it is necessary to build a robust implementation system from the start," and "Efforts by local governments such as Seoul, Gwangju, Chungnam, and Jeju, which have set their own carbon neutrality goals and are leading the way, should be expanded to all local governments."
