Daejeon Special Judicial Police Crack Down on 6 Delivery Restaurants for False Origin Labeling and More
[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] The Daejeon Special Judicial Police announced on the 3rd that they conducted a planned investigation last month targeting local delivery restaurants and caught six places violating the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods, etc.
The types of violations were classified as one company supplying red pepper powder without labeling, two delivery restaurants selling it, and three delivery restaurants falsely labeling the origin.
A company A located in Cheongyang-gun operating an instant sales manufacturing business was caught for supplying 261kg (worth about 3.75 million KRW) of unlabeled red pepper powder over two years to company B and delivery restaurant C located in Daedeok-gu, Daejeon. The city’s special judicial police plan to file charges against company A for violating the Act on Labeling and Advertising of Foods, etc., and transfer the case to the competent police station.
Additionally, the unlabeled red pepper powder supplied by company A will be ordered to cease use.
Furthermore, company D located in Dong-gu, Daejeon, operating a food manufacturing business, supplied 65kg (worth about 780,000 KRW) of Vietnamese red pepper powder to company E in Seo-gu, falsely labeling it as Chinese origin. Company E then labeled the red pepper powder used in radish kimchi as Chinese and Vietnamese origin on the origin label, causing consumer confusion about the origin.
Company F in Daedeok-gu falsely labeled 27kg (worth about 324,000 KRW) of Australian beef as American origin and used it in yukgaejang, dumpling soup, and beef rice bowls, leading to detection.
Under current law, those who sell products by falsely misrepresenting the origin may face up to 7 years imprisonment or a fine of up to 100 million KRW. Businesses selling unlabeled red pepper powder and delivery restaurants using it may face up to 3 years imprisonment or a fine of up to 30 million KRW.
