Han River~Amsa Prehistoric Site Green Path Connection Project Resumes ... Opening in 2022
Seoul City Connects Disconnected Areas to Restore Historic Value and Revitalize Communities
Olympic-daero 4-Lane Road Undergrounded... 4,800㎡ Ecological Park Built Above
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] Seoul City announced on the 2nd that it will resume the 'Amsa Chorok-gil' project, which connects the Han River and Gangdong-gu's 'Seoul Amsa-dong Archaeological Site,' separated by Olympic-daero, with a green walkway. The goal is to open it by the end of 2022.
The city plans to underground the four-lane section of Olympic-daero between Gwangnaru Hangang Park and the Seoul Amsa-dong Archaeological Site, and create an ecological park on top with a length of 100m, width of 50m, and an area of 4,800㎡. Approximately 30 billion KRW will be invested in the project.
Once Amsa Chorok-gil is established, access to Gwangnaru Hangang Park, which previously required passing through an interchange, will become more convenient. It will also complete a green axis connecting the Amsa History Park, Prehistoric Story Road, Seoul Amsa-dong Archaeological Site, and Amsa Ecological Landscape Conservation Area, expected to revitalize the region.
Centered on the Han River, the project aims to restore the historical significance of the Neolithic era when fishing and hunting-gathering were active, linking the past, present, and future. Seoul City explains that this will also strongly support future efforts to register the site as a UNESCO World Cultural Heritage.
The Amsa Chorok-gil project began construction in February 2011 but was temporarily suspended in 2013 due to financial burdens and lack of economic feasibility following a design review in 2012. It has now been resumed.
The city secured economic feasibility by improving construction methods and reducing some parts of the project, saving about 4.1 billion KRW from the original budget. Last year, a signature campaign led by Gangdong-gu to resume the project garnered strong support and sympathy from over 100,000 citizens.
By the end of this year, the city plans to relocate obstacles and open detour roads on Olympic-daero to avoid traffic disruption. Next year, construction of underground passages on Olympic-daero in the Gimpo and Hanam directions will be carried out. In 2022, various plants such as pine trees, spiraea, and forsythia will be planted on top of Amsa Chorok-gil, along with auxiliary construction.

Shin Yong-mok, head of Seoul City's Hangang Project Headquarters, said, "Once Amsa Chorok-gil opens, the nearby areas separated by Olympic-daero and the Seoul Amsa-dong Archaeological Site will be connected to the Han River, expanding citizens' living areas and reviving the region as a historic landmark. We will ensure thorough management of the construction site for citizen safety and proceed with the project without setbacks."
