Jeonnam Police Support Families at Risk of Domestic Violence Due to Alcohol and Mental Illness
Annual Medical Expense Support up to 3 Million Won for Households Below 65% of Median Income
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Chunsu Kim] Domestic violence caused by mental illnesses such as alcohol addiction has a high risk of recurrence and a growing concern of escalating into violent crimes. Therefore, treatment addressing the root causes is necessary rather than punishment. However, it has been found that low-income families frequently discontinue or neglect treatment due to financial burdens.
On the 29th, the Jeonnam Provincial Police Agency announced that, in collaboration with Jeonnam Province, it will carry out a project to support treatment costs for low-income families in crisis where domestic violence has occurred due to causes such as alcohol addiction or mental illness.
This project, the first of its kind nationwide, provides up to 3 million KRW annually in treatment cost support for low-income families requiring treatment separate from criminal punishment due to domestic violence caused by alcohol addiction or mental illness.
Through this project, it is expected that medical expense support for low-income families in crisis who cannot receive treatment due to financial burdens will help restore healthy family environments and prevent recurrence of violence.
Eligible recipients must be registered residents of Jeonnam Province and actually reside there, with household income at or below 65% of the median income. They must also be inpatients under the care of a guardian as stipulated in Article 43 of the "Act on the Promotion of Mental Health and Welfare Services for Mental Patients."
The 65% median income threshold is 1,945,000 KRW for a two-person household, 2,516,000 KRW for a three-person household, and 3,087,000 KRW for a four-person household. To receive treatment cost support, the patient or guardian must obtain a verification document of the reported incident from the police and submit it to the responsible public health center.
