The Seongbuk-gu Saemaeul Women's Association (President Jo Young-nam) is conducting a campaign encouraging citizens and merchants to refrain from using disposable products and to use reusable shopping bags in traditional market areas such as Gireum Market.
As part of social distancing measures, about 20 housewife representatives from each neighborhood participate in small groups, sharing practical examples of environmental protection in daily life, such as separating and disposing of waste vinyl and reducing the use of vinyl products.
Additionally, at the traditional market sites, the women's association members prepare shopping bags made by recycling old banners and distribute them to visitors and market merchants, raising awareness not only about environmental protection but also about using traditional markets. On the 13th, a total of 500 shopping bags were handed out to market users and merchants.
A citizen who received a recycled banner shopping bag while visiting the market said, "Although I know well that vinyl is a major cause of environmental pollution, I often end up using it because it’s inconvenient and I sometimes forget to bring a shopping bag." They added, "I will pay more attention to refraining from using disposable products and put it into practice."
Jo Young-nam, president of the Seongbuk-gu Saemaeul Women's Association, stated, "We will continue our activities by sharing small actions that can be easily practiced in daily life, such as campaigns promoting the use of shopping bags, with a heightened awareness of environmental pollution."
