Say "Regional Fence Activities" Instead of "Localtact"
“Intelligent Pole” Recommended as Alternative Term for “Smart Pole”
Ministry and Institute Encourage Use of Korean Expressions for Foreign Neologisms
Survey Finds High Approval for “Regional Fence Activities”
On October 19, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Institute of the Korean Language recommended replacing the term "localtact" with the Korean expression "regional fence activities." They also suggested "intelligent pole" and "topic web" as Korean alternatives for "smart pole" and "bubble map," respectively.
"Localtact" refers to forming relationships and engaging in communication and activities at the level of local or village communities. The selection of the alternative term "regional fence activities" was based on a survey, in which 86.7% of approximately 600 respondents said the term was appropriate.
"Smart pole" refers to pillar-shaped road facilities (such as traffic lights and street lamps) equipped with Internet of Things (IoT) and Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to provide various functions, or to such facilities themselves. "Bubble map" is a method of visually representing attributes by connecting various pieces of information around a central topic. At the recent New Words Committee meeting held from September to November, the Ministry and the Institute designated "intelligent pole" and "topic web" as the respective alternatives.

The New Words Committee is a panel that provides easy-to-understand Korean alternatives for difficult foreign neologisms before they become widespread. Experts from a variety of fields, including Korean language, foreign languages, education, public relations and publishing, information and communications, and media, participate in the committee. The Ministry and the Institute plan to continue promoting the use of these alternatives, encouraging government agencies and media outlets to take the lead in adopting them.
