Execution Rate of Cultural Heritage Signboard Maintenance Project in Gyeongnam at 47% ... Among the Lowest Nationwide

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Choi Hyun-joo] It has been confirmed that the actual execution rate of the cultural heritage signboard maintenance project in Gyeongnam is 47%, and the completion rate is 43.5%, ranking 12th nationwide, which is a low performance. Moreover, as of last month, the project completion rate was found to be 16.2%.
On the 16th, Lee Dal-gon (Changwon Jinhae), a member of the National Assembly’s Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee from the People Power Party, analyzed this based on the ‘Cultural Heritage Signboard Maintenance Project’ national audit data submitted by the Cultural Heritage Administration.
According to Rep. Lee, the cultural heritage signboard maintenance project aims to provide accurate information about cultural heritage to enhance public understanding. Over five years from 2018 to 2022, a national budget of 13.2 billion KRW has been invested to maintain signboards for 1,740 cultural heritage sites designated by the nation and cities/provinces nationwide.
Last year, the budget allocated to Gyeongnam was 1.075 billion KRW, ranking 2nd among the 17 cities and provinces, but the actual execution rate remained at 47%, placing it 13th, near the bottom.
Among the 1,740 projects nationwide, Gyeongnam accounts for 451 cases (26%), ranking first in project volume, but the completion rate was 43.5%, placing it 12th nationwide, which is in the lower tier.
Furthermore, as of the end of last month, the number of completed cultural heritage signboard maintenance projects in Gyeongnam was analyzed to be only 31 out of a total of 191 cases.

Rep. Lee criticized, “There are only three months left in this year’s project period, and I am worried whether the remaining 80% of the projects can be properly carried out. The Cultural Heritage Administration must actively step up to ensure thorough project management, such as regularly checking the status of signboards to be maintained, and to encourage local governments to take an interest in the project.”
