[2020 National Audit] Seoul City Disciplined Over 1,100 Corrupt Officials in 5 Years... Ranked 2nd Nationwide
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] It has been revealed that the number of Seoul city officials disciplined for misconduct is the second highest nationwide, following Gyeonggi Province.
According to data on the 'Disciplinary Status of Local Government Officials in the Past Five Years' submitted by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety to Park Jae-ho, a member of the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee from the Democratic Party of Korea, 1,118 Seoul city officials were punished for misconduct, second only to 1,631 in Gyeonggi Province.
Regarding the reasons for disciplinary actions against Seoul city officials, 67% (745 officials) were punished for damage to dignity, which was overwhelmingly the highest, followed by bribery (7%, 79 officials), dereliction of duty (7%, 74 officials), and violation of service regulations (5%, 59 officials).
As for the types of punishments, minor disciplinary actions such as reprimands and salary reductions accounted for 884 officials, representing 74% of all offenders, while suspensions numbered 157, demotions 35, dismissals 30, and removals 12.

Assemblyman Park Jae-ho stated, "The number of Seoul city officials punished for bribery and dereliction of duty is higher compared to other local governments. Amid national disasters such as the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19), it is necessary to reassess the values of public service so that Seoul city officials can take the lead and serve citizens, thereby fulfilling their fundamental duties."
