KOICA Provides COVID-19 Essential Supplies to 15,000 Cambodian Migrant Households
Preventing the Spread of COVID-19 in Cambodia Due to Overseas Influx and Supporting Vulnerable Groups
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] KOICA announced on the 15th that it will collaborate with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Cambodia to provide 15,000 emergency food and hygiene kits to migrants.
Due to the impact of COVID-19, approximately 110,000 Cambodian migrants who lost their jobs overseas have returned to their home country since March this year. Most of these migrants belong to vulnerable groups with unclear residence status within Cambodia, and during the mandatory two-week self-quarantine period following COVID-19 testing upon entry, they face difficulties maintaining even minimal meals without external support.
Accordingly, KOICA will provide emergency food and health hygiene kits to 15,000 households under self-quarantine in the five regions with the highest migrant inflow or residence to offer humanitarian aid to vulnerable groups entering Cambodia and to prevent the spread of COVID-19. Distribution began on the 14th and is planned to be completed by December this year.
The emergency food kits are composed mainly of essential food items such as 10kg of rice, canned fish, biscuits, and water to help migrants sustain meals during the self-quarantine period. The accompanying health hygiene kits include soap, shampoo, toothbrushes, masks, and other items for personal hygiene management.
In addition, KOICA is conducting basic health education on handwashing, social distancing, and proper mask-wearing to prevent the spread of COVID-19 for 100,000 Cambodian migrants, and is simultaneously providing infectious disease response training, including COVID-19 testing and specimen collection methods, to 160 local healthcare workers.
