Imported cases from overseas remained around 30 for the third consecutive day. Previously, a group outbreak occurred among foreigners who entered for training from Nepal, followed by a cluster infection among sailors from Russia, and on the previous day, many arrivals from the United States tested positive.
According to the Central Disease Control Headquarters, as of 0:00 on this day, 53 cases were estimated to be domestic community infections, and 31 cases were imported from overseas. By region, Seoul had 23 cases and Incheon had 8 cases, all of which were community infections. Gyeonggi Province had 31 cases, with 15 being community infections and 16 imported cases. In Daejeon, where a cluster outbreak spread through family gatherings, 4 people tested positive, and 2 were confirmed in Busan. One new confirmed case each was reported in Ulsan and Chungnam.
Domestic community infections have been around 50 to 60 cases daily for two weeks, while recently, imported cases have been increasing again. On the 12th, a group of foreigners who entered from Nepal in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province, were collectively infected, and the next day, many sailors on a ship arriving from Russia were infected. In the past three days, the total number of imported confirmed cases reached 93.
Among the imported cases confirmed on this day, the largest number was 13 arrivals from the United States, followed by 5 from the Philippines, 3 from Japan, and 2 each from Uzbekistan, Russia, and Nepal. Additionally, one case each was confirmed among arrivals from Myanmar, Kuwait, Mexico, and Guatemala. Fourteen were identified at the quarantine stage, and the remaining 17 were confirmed after being in the community. Two were Korean nationals, and the other 29 were foreigners.
Although not included in the statistics of the Disease Control Headquarters on this day, a new cluster infection occurred in Busan. According to Busan city health authorities, after a nursing assistant at Haetteurak Nursing Hospital tested positive the previous day, 262 hospital staff and patients were tested, and a total of 52 people were notified of positive results as of this morning.
The number of critically and severely ill patients was 85, down by 6 from the previous day. Four people died, increasing the total domestic death toll to 438. The total cumulative confirmed COVID-19 cases in the country rose to 24,889, and the number of patients currently isolated and under treatment was counted at 1,421.
