BTS Featuring 'Savage Love' Tops Billboard Chart... Another Triumph Following 'Dynamite'
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] The group BTS (Bangtan Sonyeondan) has reached number one on the US Billboard main singles chart, the 'Hot 100,' with the remix version of "Savage Love," on which they participated as featured artists. This marks their second Hot 100 number one hit following "Dynamite."
On the 12th (local time), Billboard reported in a preview article that the remix of "Savage Love" by Josh 685, Jason Derulo, and BTS ranked first on this week's Hot 100 chart. The Hot 100 is a weekly chart that ranks the most popular songs in the US by combining streaming performance, digital sales, and radio airplay.
"Savage Love" is a song originally created by New Zealand producer Josh 685 titled "Laxed," with added vocals by Derulo. It gained popularity through the video platform TikTok.
BTS took charge of the chorus and rap parts in the remix version released on the 2nd. They performed not only the English lyrics but also Korean lyrics such as "Love might be just a series of fleeting emotions / Conditions all attached, what is it that I love?"
While "Savage Love" ranked 8th on last week's Hot 100 chart, it jumped to number one this week, boosted by the release of the BTS remix version (both vocal and instrumental).
During the Hot 100 tracking period (2nd to 8th), "Savage Love" was streamed 16 million times in the US. Downloads surged by 814% compared to the previous week, reaching 76,000.
Billboard usually counts remix versions as a single song, but due to the significant contribution of the BTS remix version, BTS was also credited with the Hot 100 number one ranking.
Billboard explained, "Most of the digital sales were driven by the BTS remix version, and the total streaming numbers were roughly split between the BTS participation version and the non-participation version. Since consumption during the tracking period leaned toward the BTS version, BTS was officially credited."
On this week's Hot 100 chart, following the "Savage Love" remix, "Dynamite" took second place, placing BTS songs at first and second positions consecutively.
According to Billboard, the last time a group simultaneously held the number one and two spots on the Hot 100 was Black Eyed Peas with "Boom Boom Pow" and "I Gotta Feeling" in June-July 2009. Other duos or groups with such records include Outkast, the Bee Gees, and The Beatles.
"Dynamite" debuted at number one on the Hot 100 on August 31, its first week of release, and has maintained a strong presence in the top ranks, holding number one three times and number two four times over seven weeks. It has also topped the Digital Song Sales chart for seven consecutive weeks and climbed from 39th to 26th on the Radio Songs chart, showing steady progress.
On the same day, BTS expressed their gratitude to fans via Twitter, saying, "We sincerely thank ARMY for your unwavering love and support."
