Brazilian President Says "Don't Worry" Despite COVID-19 Deaths Surpassing 150,000
"Feeling Nothing... Not Even a Mild Flu"
Cumulative Death Toll Exceeds 150,000... Second Highest After the US
[Asia Economy Reporter Minji Lee] Jair Bolsonaro, the President of Brazil, once again made remarks denying the severity of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19).
According to Brazilian media on the 10th (local time), despite the cumulative death toll exceeding 150,000, President Bolsonaro reportedly told his supporters, "There is no need to worry about catching COVID-19."
On that day, President Bolsonaro stated, "Even if you catch COVID-19 one day, there is no need to worry," adding, "I am 65 years old, but I felt nothing. It’s not even a mild flu, it’s nothing."
President Bolsonaro tested positive for COVID-19 in July and entered quarantine at the presidential residence. After testing negative on the fourth test, he returned to work after about 20 days.
Previously, President Bolsonaro repeatedly denied the seriousness of COVID-19. Even after the virus spread widely in Brazil, he described it as a "mild flu" and dismissed the growing fear of COVID-19 as "media hysteria." He also strongly criticized local governments’ social distancing and economic lockdown measures.
Additionally, President Bolsonaro has shown negligence in quarantine measures by going out on the streets of Brasilia without wearing a mask, ignoring social distancing, shaking hands, hugging supporters, and taking photos. Brazil ranks third in cumulative confirmed cases after the United States and India, and second in cumulative deaths after the United States.
