'Glossy This Fall' The Fashion Formula That Even COVID Couldn't Change
[Asia Economy Reporter Yujin Cho] As 'glossy lipstick' emerges as a makeup trend this fall, related companies are continuously launching new products.
According to the industry on the 9th, Able C&C's Missha has increased the number of glossy formula lipstick items released this year to 18, up from 12 last year. The proportion of glossy products among all new releases also rose from 24% to 33%. A Missha representative explained, "Among the Missha Dare Tint Matte Tattoo line released last season, all 10 items were matte products, but this fall and winter, the Dare Tint Mirror Slick line launched this month consists entirely of 5 glossy items."
Vidivici, a cosmetics brand operated by Shinsegae International, also offers 2 out of 3 lip products targeting the fall and winter season in glossy formulas. A Vidivici representative stated, "We introduced a total of 3 lip products for this fall and winter season, among which 'Millennial Glow in Balm' (8 shades) and 'Millennial Crystal Gel' (7 shades) are composed of products featuring the season's trend of glossy shine."
As glossy lip makeup is predicted to be popular this fall, related product launches are continuing. An industry insider explained, "The fall and winter season traditionally emphasizes lip makeup as a trend, and due to the impact of COVID-19, there is a partial recovery in demand for glossy lipsticks that provide a slight color and shine to light makeup."
The industry analyzed that the continued preference for glossy lipsticks is closely related to the phenomenon of lipsticks selling well during economic downturns. As the recession caused by COVID-19 continues, more women are indulging in small luxuries with relatively affordable lipsticks instead of expensive items like luxury goods.
A Cosmax representative said, "There is no significant difference in the sales ratio between matte and glossy lipsticks compared to last year," adding, "Glossy lipsticks were very weak due to mask-wearing earlier this year, but there is a slight recovery trend entering the fall and winter season."
