Expanding Worldwide: 'Our Hangeul, the World's Great Script' ... Hangeul Day Celebration on the 9th
Around 10 AM in front of Sujeongjeon Hall, Gyeongbokgung Palace
[Asia Economy Reporter Jo In-kyung] The Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 8th that it will hold a celebration ceremony in front of the Sujeongjeon Hall at Gyeongbokgung Palace at 10 a.m. on the 9th to commemorate the 574th Hangeul Day.
This celebration ceremony is held under the theme "Our Hangeul, the Great Script of the World" to widely promote the excellence of Hangeul, which was created based on the spirit of benevolence, and to support the globalization of Hangeul spreading worldwide. The Sujeongjeon Hall at Gyeongbokgung Palace, where the event takes place, was used as Jiphyeonjeon during King Sejong's reign and was rebuilt during King Gojong's era after being destroyed in the Imjin War. It is a historic site closely related to the creation of Hangeul.
The ceremony will be co-hosted by broadcaster Tyler Rasch and announcer Eom Ji-in, who hosts KBS's "Urimal Gyurogi" program. This is the first time a foreigner has hosted the Hangeul Day celebration ceremony.
The ceremony will begin with a media art video screening that visualizes beautiful Korean words using the 14 consonants of Hangeul, followed by the national anthem, the original text of Hunminjeongeum, and an easy-to-understand reading of the "Hunminjeongeum Head Letters." The reading will feature Kwon Jae-il, president of the Hangeul Society, students Han Jeong-bin and Lee Cha-min from the Hangeul club "Hunminjeongeum" at Michuhol Foreign Language High School, and Moon So-hyun, who runs a YouTube channel related to Korean language education.
This year, the Hangeul Development Meritorious Service Award will be presented to five recipients, including Kim Wan-jin, professor emeritus at Seoul National University who has devoted over 60 years to Korean language and Hangeul research, and the Hangeul Cultural Solidarity, a non-profit organization.
Following this, there will be a congratulatory performance featuring musical prodigy Kim Tae-yeon, a performance video by the Korean foreigner music group "Hangeul," and a virtual choir composed of 116 people from around the world who love Hangeul and sent in videos of themselves singing. This will express a world united by Hangeul. Afterward, Cha Jae-kyung, vice chairman of the King Sejong Memorial Association, will lead the attendees in three cheers of "manse" and conclude the event by singing the Hangeul Day song together.
