Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism Expands Overseas Sejong Institutes to 270 Locations "Let's Shine the Value of Hangeul"

View original imageThe Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Hangeul Museum announced on the 4th that they will hold the '2020 Hangeul Week' to celebrate the 574th Hangeul Day. From the 5th to the 11th, exhibitions, performances, experiences, and academic conferences reflecting on the spirit and meaning of Hangeul's creation will be presented on the website.
Held online, anyone can participate regardless of time or place. These include the theater company Gongmyeong's 'Yeominrak Dreamed by King Sejong,' theater company Hatangse's 'ㅋ, Ko, Nose Flapping, Brush Wind,' Sabina Art Museum's 'Hangeul Loved by Big Data,' the Korean Language Society's 'National Linguistics Academic Conference,' and the Oesol Association's '12th Jiphyeonjeon Academic Conference.' Fifteen National Language and Culture Centers nationwide, forty-seven Korean Cultural Centers overseas, and 134 Sejong Institutes abroad will also offer Korean speaking and writing, traditional Korean games experiences, and hanji craft workshops.

It will feature the performance 'Our Music Heard Through Our Script' by the Seo Ui-cheol Gadan, the Sejong Culture Award ceremony, and the storytelling performance 'Hangeul, Speaking of the Dignity of Language.' On Hangeul Day, a celebration ceremony will be held along with 'Gagya Competition,' a contest to determine the winner by solving King Sejong-related questions, and Kim Ansik's picture performance 'Beautiful Hangeul.'

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism plans to secure a large-scale budget for next year to promote policies for the spread of Hangeul and the Korean language. The number of overseas Sejong Institutes will be expanded to 270 by 2020, and the number of Korean language online learners will be increased to 100,000. Additionally, projects such as planning for easy Korean usage in newspapers, broadcasting, and the internet, professional terminology maintenance, and establishing a system for providing new foreign language terms will be carried out. Minister Park Yang-woo of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism said, "Hangeul is a symbol of the new Korean Wave and a content of the Republic of Korea with infinite potential," and added, "Let us unite our efforts so that Hangeul can shine in value as a world cultural heritage through the establishment of a sound language culture."
