Gyeongbuk Agricultural Research Institute Develops and Distributes 'New Chrysanthemum and Rose Varieties' at Gumi Flower Research Center
Foreign Flower Crop Variety Royalties Exceed 10 Billion Won Annually
"Efforts to Develop Our Varieties to Receive Royalties in the Global Market"
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Park Dong-wook] The Gyeongsangbuk-do Agricultural Research and Extension Services announced on the 2nd that the Gumi Floriculture Research Institute is distributing the newly registered spray chrysanthemum 'Freshendy' and rose 'White Soap' varieties, recently registered with the National Seed Management Office, to floriculture farmers.
The newly developed spray chrysanthemum 'Freshendy' was crossbred in 2010 and registered after more than 10 years of cultivation trials and characteristic evaluations. It is a white double-flowered cut flower variety with sturdy stems and a distinct flower center.
The 'White Soap' variety, a light pink standard-type rose developed in 2006, has excellent growth even during the high temperatures of summer and is easy to propagate through grafting and cuttings.
Since 2012, all floricultural crops have been designated as internationally protected varieties, requiring payment of royalties when cultivating foreign varieties. According to the Gyeongbuk Agricultural Research and Extension Services, the royalties paid for floricultural crops exceed 10 billion KRW annually.
Park Jun-hong, director of the Gumi Floriculture Research Institute, stated, "Major cut flowers such as roses and chrysanthemums have diverse consumer bases and short variety renewal periods of 3 to 4 years. Consumer preferences change rapidly, increasing the demand among floriculture farmers for new varieties. Through pilot cultivation and promotion of new varieties, once they are fully distributed to farms, it will greatly help secure the competitiveness of the Gyeongbuk floriculture industry."
