[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Yeon-ju] Professor Kim Geun-sik of Gyeongnam National University, chairman of the People Power Party's Songpa-byeong district committee in Seoul, criticized the ruling party for defending President Moon Jae-in's claim that he was unaware of the National Security Council (NSC) meeting regarding the incident in which a South Korean official was shot and killed by North Korean soldiers on the 29th, calling it a "cowardly excuse."
In a post on his Facebook on the same day, Professor Kim said, "A normal president would recognize the gravity of the situation and naturally wait until the meeting ends and then take immediate action."
Earlier, on the 28th, Democratic Party lawmaker Seol Hoon appeared on KBS's 'Sasa Geongeon' and said, "Between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., relevant ministers held an NSC meeting, but does the president have to attend? Not necessarily. He can choose not to."
Lawmaker Seol added, "The president is sleeping at dawn; is this the kind of matter that needs to be reported? Was there a battle? It's not even a state of combat, so would they wake the president at 3 a.m. to report? Where in the world is such a report made?"
Regarding these remarks, Professor Kim criticized, "The news of the disappearance, discovery, and shooting was successively reported to the Blue House, and due to the seriousness, the security ministers' meeting was held late at night. The Blue House is trying to evade responsibility by claiming the president was unaware of the security ministers' meeting, but that makes no sense."
Professor Kim questioned, "If the president was unaware of the urgent late-night security ministers' meeting, is he a hot potato? A scarecrow? Or is he an irresponsible and lazy president who didn't care about such matters from the start?"

He then said, "Lawmaker Seol Hoon, please stop. If it's okay not to report because it's dawn, that's pathetic too." He continued, "Is this the Joseon Dynasty? Since the king is asleep, should we not wake him even if one subject dies before he coughs in the morning?" "I don't know if Lawmaker Seol is overdoing it aiming for next year's party leadership, but even if defending the president, at least make sense. Defense should not become sophistry."
