[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] A petition regarding the enactment of the Serious Accidents Punishment Act for Corporations was established on the 22nd after receiving the consent of 100,000 people on the National Assembly's National Mobilization Petition platform.
The National Assembly requires that petitions with the consent of 100,000 people within 30 days be referred to the relevant standing committee for review. Accordingly, the Serious Accidents Punishment Act for Corporations has been referred to the Legislative and Judiciary Committee, the competent committee, as well as the Environment and Labor Committee, a related committee.
The person who submitted this petition is Kim Mi-sook, chairperson of the Kim Yong-gyun Foundation and mother of the late Kim Yong-gyun, who died after being caught in a conveyor belt at the Taean Thermal Power Plant.

In the petition, Chairperson Kim stated, "In order to prevent workers from dying unjustly from industrial accidents at workplaces like Yong-gyun, the Serious Accidents Punishment Act for Corporations must be enacted," adding, "It is a law that punishes companies and their responsible persons who fail to fulfill their duty to protect the safety and lives of workers and citizens."
