[Asia Economy Intern Reporter Kim Bong-ju] A pastor who assaulted an intellectually disabled person and embezzled about 69 million won in social security benefits over 6 years and 8 months has been arrested and indicted.
On the 15th, the Cheongju District Prosecutors' Office announced that Pastor A of a church in Jeungpyeong-gun, Chungbuk, was arrested and indicted on charges of violating the Disabled Welfare Act and embezzlement.
A is accused of violently beating B (63), a person with severe intellectual disabilities, with a stick at his church on April 24.
From that day until April 28, A assaulted and abused the victim five times.
Pastor A worked as a caregiver for disabled persons. Caregivers receive training at the Disabled Activity Support Education Center and then visit disabled individuals directly to assist with mobility, daily living, and meal support, receiving payment for these services.
At the request of B, a church member and his mother, A had been caring for the victim for about 6 years and 8 months from October 2013 until last May.
According to the prosecution's investigation, while caring for B, A kept possession of B's bankbook and embezzled about 69 million won in social security benefits paid to the victim, including housing benefits.
A used the embezzled money to pay communication bills, home shopping purchases, and loan repayments.
