Macron Stands Firm on "Continuing 5G Transition Project" Despite Opposition
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeon Jin-young] French President Emmanuel Macron announced on the 14th (local time) that despite criticism mainly from the left-wing camp, he will continue the network construction project for the transition to 5th generation mobile communication (5G). The left-wing camp is advocating for a postponement of the 5G transition project.
Local foreign media such as AFP and Le Monde reported that President Macron, at a meeting where he invited representatives of domestic digital companies to the ?lys?e Palace, firmly drew a line against opposing public opinion by saying, "France will take the lead in the 5G transition."
He pointed out the opposition by saying, "France is a country of innovation. Negative public opinions will come to an end," and "I am hearing various voices telling us to go back to the era of using oil lamps to solve complex issues now."
President Macron's remarks on this day were aimed at the request for a postponement of 5G introduction urged the day before by Jean-Luc M?lenchon, leader of the radical left party La France Insoumise (Unsubmissive France).
The French government will start the distribution of 5G frequencies essential for implementing innovative projects such as autonomous vehicles, virtual reality, and the Internet of Things at the end of this month, marking the beginning of the full-scale 5G network construction project.
