[LG Wing Unveiled] Tested 200,000 Times... Durability, Waterproofing, and Weight?
Passed 200,000 Swivel Tests
Weighs 260g, Lighter Than Foldable Phones
Water-Repellent Coating Provides Everyday Water Resistance
Designed to Protect the Second Screen from Damage
[Asia Economy Reporter Jinju Han] The LG Wing underwent a durability test involving 200,000 rotations. The development team emphasized focusing on making it slim and lightweight while ensuring smooth rotation and durability. They chose to introduce the 'Swivel Mode' to provide a new user experience while maintaining familiar habits.
Jung Min-yong, a senior engineer at LG Electronics, stated, "The LG Wing includes various drop tests from multiple angles both when swiveled and not swiveled, as well as bonding stress tests, residual shock tests, touch sensor and key press tests. In particular, after more than 200,000 repeated tests, we confirmed that stable swivel operation is maintained throughout the product’s lifespan." He added, "We also conducted over 20 tests under environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, dust, and water, and by applying water-repellent coating technology, we provide a level of water resistance suitable for everyday life." The LG Wing has obtained certification for nine items, including impact tests dropping from a height of 1.2 meters at 26 different angles.
Since the LG Wing has two displays, LG Electronics made continuous efforts to reduce the overall weight. They used high-strength aluminum alloy materials and applied a perforation technique by creating holes in parts that do not affect the product’s exterior or rigidity to reduce weight.
To make it 20g lighter than foldable phones, they changed materials and applied the perforation method. Kim Ah-hyun, a responsible engineer at LG Electronics who participated in the development, explained, "The LG Wing is the lightest new form factor phone released so far. To reduce the initial weight of 314g, we minimized the frame thickness using metal alloy materials, reduced weight by 16.1g through perforation techniques and composite lightweight materials, and further reduced 5.3g by minimizing the size of the hinge module."
Kim added, "We developed a compact mobile hinge that operates firmly and luxuriously, applying dual spring, dual lock, and hydraulic damper technologies. The dual spring disperses the force applied during swivel motion into two, securing a stable structure and durability. The dual lock helps distribute the force applied to the hinge to prevent loosening. The hydraulic damper softens shocks during swiveling, providing a smooth rotation feel."
