Expansion of 4 Public and National Childcare Centers in Dongjak-gu This Year
Daum, Gaon, Doremi, Kkumdam Expansion Strengthens Public Childcare Foundation and Leads Safe Childcare Environment... Total 68 National and Public Childcare Centers Increased... Achieving 50% Utilization Rate with 4 Additional Openings This Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Dongjak-gu (Mayor Changwoo Lee) has expanded four public daycare centers this year to strengthen the foundation of public childcare.
The newly opened daycare centers this year are ▲ Kkumdam Daycare Center (Sangdo 1-dong) ▲ Gaon Daycare Center (Sangdo 3-dong) ▲ Doremi Daycare Center (Heukseok-dong) ▲ Daum Daycare Center (Sadang 5-dong), totaling four locations.
Currently, there are a total of 68 public daycare centers in the area, achieving this year’s target utilization rate of 50% for public daycare centers, which exceeds the government’s 40% and Seoul’s average of 43% (as of August 2020).
Kkumdam Daycare Center, which opened in March, has established ‘Mom’s Heart Cafe,’ an indoor play space where parents and children can use together, and Gaon Daycare Center plans to establish ‘Mom’s Heart Cafe’ by July next year.
Doremi Daycare Center, considering the increased childcare demand due to the redevelopment project in Heukseok-dong, uses all floors from basement level 1 to the 3rd floor above ground, with a total floor area of 856㎡ and a capacity of 95 children, entirely as childcare rooms.
Daum Daycare Center is the first facility established under the regulation requiring daycare centers in apartment complexes with more than 500 households, granting priority admission to children of residents in the apartment complex, thereby addressing the childcare demand of residents in densely populated apartment complexes.
In addition, the district allocated 45 million KRW from its budget to support internal remodeling work for safe facility environments and comfortable childcare spaces for children at each facility, as well as necessary equipment and teaching materials.
For more detailed information regarding the opening of new public daycare centers, inquiries can be made to the Childcare Division.
Kim Kyung-ok, head of the Childcare Division, said, “Childcare is a universal welfare that all children should enjoy without exception,” and added, “We will expand 12 more public daycare centers by 2023 and strive to create a childbirth- and parenting-friendly childcare environment.”
Since 2016, the district has strengthened publicness by promoting the nation’s first ‘Childcare Office’ project, where the Childcare Comprehensive Support Center serves as the control tower for childcare, and last year, it held the final report meeting of the Childcare Office project research service to discuss the future of this evolved childcare office project.
