Prime Minister Jeong: "4th Supplementary Budget for 'Customized Emergency Disaster Relief'... Quickly Delivered to Those Most in Need"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwangho Lee] Prime Minister Chung Sye-kyun requested on the 10th, "We will prepare to ensure that the supplementary budget (supplementary budget) is quickly delivered to those who are most in need," and asked, "I ask the National Assembly to understand the urgency of the people and process the supplementary budget as quickly as possible."
At the 46th extraordinary Cabinet meeting held at the Government Seoul Office on the same day, Prime Minister Chung said, "This supplementary budget, totaling 7.8 trillion won, includes a 'customized emergency disaster relief' budget for those suffering from the resurgence of the novel coronavirus infection (COVID-19)."
Prime Minister Chung mentioned, "The number of confirmed COVID-19 cases, which had surged to about 400 per day, has recently dropped to the 100s," and added, "Although the urgent fire has been put out, I am well aware that behind it were the tears of many small business owners and self-employed people who willingly made sacrifices for their neighbors."
He continued, "We will support those whose sales have plummeted or who have faced business restrictions due to strengthened social distancing measures to get back on their feet," emphasizing, "We will help vulnerable employment groups through the second emergency employment stabilization subsidy and the expansion of employment retention subsidies, and also increase financial support for small and medium-sized enterprises."
He added, "We will reduce blind spots in livelihood support for low-income groups and alleviate the increasing burden related to caregiving."
Prime Minister Chung also said, "This customized support is an emergency measure to offer a ray of hope to our neighbors who are enduring unbearable pain," and noted, "Since everyone is going through difficult times, those excluded from the support targets will likely feel great disappointment and regret."
He went on to explain, "However, given that the national finances are strained after three rounds of supplementary budgets, the funds for this supplementary budget must be entirely raised through borrowing," and said, "Although we want to provide support to all citizens, considering the limited resources, it was an unavoidable choice to provide substantial support centered on those who have suffered the most rather than giving small amounts to everyone."
