People Power Party: "Election Commission Must Immediately Explain the Leak of Information Regarding Jo Su-jin's Complaint and Investigation"
"Election Commission Will Not Tolerate 'Political Power Abuse'"
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] Members of the People Power Party belonging to the National Assembly's Public Administration and Security Committee stated on the 10th, “Democratic Party member Kim Yong-min explicitly stated through his Facebook and press releases that ‘It has been confirmed that People Power Party member Jo Su-jin was reported to the Central Election Commission for allegedly spreading false information,’” and added, “The Central Election Commission must immediately clarify the acts of leaking information regarding the filing of complaints and investigations of opposition party members.”
They held a press conference at the National Assembly Communication Office on the same day, saying, “The Central Election Commission confirmed to a ruling party member whether a complaint had been filed against an opposition party member,” and “It has also been revealed that the Central Election Commission leaked to the media again about whether an investigation had been initiated in relation to this matter.”
They stated, “On the other hand, the Central Election Commission has remained silent in response to the opposition party’s demand to confirm whether a complaint has been filed regarding the ruling party member’s underreporting of assets,” and “We will never tolerate the politicization of the Election Commission, which must strictly uphold the law, justice, and principles.”
They explained, “Article 250 of the Public Official Election Act, which Member Kim cites as grounds while mentioning the invalidation of Member Jo’s election, stipulates that ‘Anyone who publishes or causes to publish false information related to assets, etc., favorable to a candidate for the purpose of being elected or helping to be elected may be subject to election invalidation,’” and added, “As the preamble of this provision indicates, election invalidation based on each violation presupposes the ‘purpose of being elected or helping to be elected.’ Therefore, there is no evidence to suggest that acts such as omission of asset reporting by proportional representation candidates directly affected the election.”
