Democratic Party Jeonnam Provincial Party “We Can Never Give Up on Establishing a Public Medical School in the Jeonnam Region”
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] The Democratic Party of Korea Jeonnam Provincial Party announced on the 7th that it "will never give up on the establishment of a medical school in the Jeonnam region, a long-cherished wish of 2 million residents," in response to the suspension of the establishment of a public medical school following the agreement between the government, ruling party, and the Korean Medical Association.
In a statement titled "We Cannot Give Up on the Establishment of a Medical School in the Jeonnam Region," the Jeonnam Provincial Party emphasized, "While we welcome the withdrawal of the medical strike, it is neither desirable nor acceptable for the establishment of a medical school in the Jeonnam region to be halted in order to resolve regional medical imbalances and guarantee the health rights of residents."
They added, "Doctors, in exchange for ending the strike, have succeeded in demanding the suspension of the expansion of medical school quotas and the establishment of public medical schools, making it unlikely for the medical disparity in Jeonnam?the only region nationwide without a medical school and affiliated hospital?to be resolved anytime soon."
Furthermore, they stressed, "The establishment of a medical school in Jeonnam is a policy aimed at securing residents' health rights and resolving medical imbalances, which is on a different level than simply expanding medical school quotas. Jeonnam, which has been left behind due to the unbalanced development policies of past authoritarian governments, must not be further neglected even in terms of medical infrastructure."
The provincial party also pledged, "We will make every effort to ensure that the establishment of a medical school in the Jeonnam region is definitely included in the future re-discussion process of the medical policy consultative body."
