View original image[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Yoon Jamin] As Typhoon No. 9 'Maysak (MAYSAK)' moves northward, Gwangju and Jeonnam regions are forecasted to be directly affected on the 2nd and 3rd of next month.
According to the Gwangju Regional Meteorological Administration on the 31st, as of 3 PM, Typhoon 'Maysak' is moving north-northwest at a speed of 37 km/h in the sea about 270 km south of Okinawa, Japan.
The central pressure is 950 hPa, the radius of strong winds is about 380 km, and the maximum wind speed has developed into a strong intensity of 155 km/h (43 m/s).
It is expected to pass east of Jeju Island on the afternoon of the 2nd and then pass near the Gyeongsang coast early in the morning on the 3rd, moving into the East Sea in the morning.
The Meteorological Administration expects it to pass closest to Jeonnam around dawn on the 3rd, with the radius of strong winds at that time estimated to be a maximum of about 300 km and a minimum (northwest-west direction) of about 200 km.
Passing slowly through a high sea surface temperature area around 30℃ distributed along its path, it will receive a large amount of water vapor, causing the central pressure to develop very strongly to 935 hPa, and it is expected to maintain a very strong intensity around 940 hPa even when entering the sea east of Jeju Island.
However, since the surrounding winds affecting the typhoon's path are weak, the future movement path is very variable.
The North Pacific High on the right is far to the east, so due to the influence of dry air approaching from the west, there is a possibility of moving to the right while moving northward.
In this case, there is also a possibility that the typhoon will move over the sea without making landfall.
The maximum risk period for the typhoon is from the afternoon of the 2nd to the morning of the 3rd for rainfall, and from the afternoon of the 2nd to the morning of the 3rd for wind.
As Maysak approaches the Korean Peninsula, 50 to 150 mm of rain is expected in the Gwangju and Jeonnam regions from the 1st to the 3rd of next month.
Due to the influence of raincloud bands accompanying the typhoon, rain will begin in Jeonnam from late afternoon on the 1st and continue until daytime on the 3rd.
Strong winds are also expected.
On the 2nd and 3rd, very strong winds with maximum instantaneous wind speeds of 72 to 144 km/h (20 to 40 m/s) are expected in Gwangju and Jeonnam.
