Grandmother Imakdal, a Victim of Japanese Military Sexual Slavery, Passes Away
[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] Lee Makdal (97), a victim of the Japanese military sexual slavery, has passed away.
On the 30th, the Justice and Memory Foundation (Jeonguiyeondae) announced that Lee passed away in Busan on the 29th.
Lee was born in 1923 in Hadong, Gyeongnam, and around 1940, when she was 17, she was forced to accompany two Japanese men who said they would "get her a good job." She was then victimized as a sexual slave at a comfort station in Taiwan. After liberation, Lee returned to Busan and officially registered as a victim with the government in 2005. She participated in the Wednesday demonstrations demanding resolution of the Japanese military sexual slavery issue and testified about her experiences abroad. Since then, she had lived continuously in Busan.
