Gyeongju City Cleans Up 'Seongdong Market' Street Vendors... Canopies and Standardized Stalls Installed
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Dong-wook] Gyeongju City, Gyeongbuk Province announced on the 30th that it will spend 200 million KRW to renovate sidewalks and install canopies within Seongdong Market to organize street vendors throughout the market area.
On the 120m sidewalk section from Kyobo Life Insurance to Haedong Pharmacy along Hwarang-ro, south of Seongdong Market, parasols, vinyl sheets, and tarps will be removed, and standardized stalls along with canopies measuring 2.5m in width and 2.7m in height will be installed to allow existing street vendors to display and sell their products. The sidewalk will be widened to 3m and replaced with urban-style paving blocks.
Regarding this, Gyeongju City held a meeting on the 27th at the Hwango-dong Administrative Welfare Center conference room with street vendors in Seongdong Market, announcing plans to provide a pleasant walking environment and requesting active cooperation from the vendors.

A city official stated, "The market renovation project will be carried out concurrently with the undergrounding of power lines on Hwarang-ro, implemented by KEPCO, with construction starting in early October and completion planned by the end of the year." He added, "We ask for the understanding and cooperation of nearby residents, merchants, and all those who use the traditional market, even if there are some inconveniences during the project period."
