View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunju Lee] The 9th typhoon of the year, 'Maysak (MAYSAK),' is expected to affect South Korea in early next month.
According to the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA), at around 3 a.m. on the 28th, the 18th tropical depression formed approximately 1180 km east of Manila, Philippines. The KMA forecasts that this tropical depression will develop into the 9th typhoon, Maysak, within 24 hours. A KMA official explained, "There is a possibility that it could develop into a typhoon as early as tonight."
Currently, the typhoon is highly likely to head toward South Korea. It is expected to be located in the sea south of Seogwipo around the 2nd of next month. This typhoon is also expected to pass through a high sea surface temperature zone (above 30 degrees Celsius) in the Northwest Pacific, which could strengthen its intensity. If the forecast holds, South Korea will experience strong winds and rain from a typhoon again about a week after the 8th typhoon, 'Bavi (BAVI),' passed.
Of course, the exact typhoon path is still difficult to determine. This is because it is hard to be certain about the position of the North Pacific High when the typhoon moves northward. Yoon Ki-han, a spokesperson for the KMA, said, "Typhoons move along the edge of the North Pacific High, which currently extends up to the Korea Strait. There are several possible paths the typhoon could take, so there is still a lot of uncertainty at this point."

Up to August this year, six typhoons have developed, with two affecting South Korea. The average number of typhoons occurring in August is 5.8, and the average number affecting South Korea is 1.1. In its climate outlook for September to November, the KMA predicted that 1 to 2 more typhoons will approach South Korea during the autumn season.
