[Asia Economy Reporter Ki-min Lee] Samsung Electronics is carrying out win-win activities such as introducing excellent technologies and disclosing patents to enhance the competitiveness of partner companies and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) struggling due to the impact of the novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19).
On the 19th, Samsung Electronics held the '2020 1st Excellent Technology Briefing Session' for SMEs together with the Center for Management of Science and Technology Personnel (COMPA), introducing excellent technologies owned by domestic universities and research institutes as well as government research and development (R&D) support projects, and providing technology consultations.
This briefing session was conducted online using a video conferencing system to help discover future growth engines by introducing new technologies needed by SMEs, despite difficulties in holding traditional face-to-face meetings due to the spread of COVID-19.
The event covered technology fields related to materials, parts, and equipment (SoBuJang), divided into three sessions, including ▲flexible coating films ▲metal nanoparticles ▲wireless chemical substance detection sensors ▲Internet of Things (IoT) Connected for electric vehicles ▲electronic component defect inspection ▲and smart factory process optimization.
In each session, 63 excellent technologies including SoBuJang technologies and national strategic technologies from seven universities recommended by COMPA, such as Korea University, and five public research institutes including the Korea Institute of Science and Technology were introduced along with government R&D support policies.
Along with introducing excellent technologies, Samsung Electronics arranged customized technology consultations with experts and meetings with related institutions for technology adoption to support actual commercialization. In particular, since 2015, Samsung Electronics has opened its patents free of charge, allowing not only partner companies but also non-affiliated companies to freely utilize them. During this briefing session, consultations on the transfer of a total of 8,000 patents in fields such as semiconductors, mobile, and home appliances opened by Samsung Electronics were also conducted.
Under rapidly changing business environments, Samsung Electronics has been holding the 'Excellent Technology Briefing Session' since 2009 to establish a foundation for SMEs to sustain growth and to discover future growth engines for the national economy. Since 2015, it has also collaborated with government agencies to ensure that introduced technologies can be practically applied to SME businesses.
So far, a total of 24 briefing sessions have been held, with over 3,000 participants including executives and developers from about 1,600 small and medium-sized enterprises. Additionally, more than 250 cases of technology introductions and information exchanges have taken place. Partner companies have built industry-academia-research cooperation processes to secure necessary technologies by participating in the technology briefings, and have utilized government R&D support systems introduced by various ministries to mass-produce projects.
Joo Eun-gi, Vice President and Head of Samsung Electronics Win-Win Cooperation Center, said, "Samsung Electronics is conducting activities such as technology development support, financial support, innovation activities support, and human resource development to enhance the competitiveness of not only partner companies but also small and medium-sized enterprises." He added, "We will continue to strive for mutual growth of large and small-medium enterprises through various win-win cooperation programs."
