Small SUVs Become Major Market... Racing Toward '250,000 Units Annually'
Rapid Growth of Domestic Compact SUVs '20,000 Units Sold Monthly'
Beyond Strengthening Lineup, Becoming Volume Models for Each Company
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Ji-hee] As the popularity of compact sport utility vehicles (SUVs) rises domestically, the market has grown into a massive scale exceeding 200,000 units annually. Sales of domestically produced compact SUVs, which were only around 180,000 units last year, are expected to surpass 200,000 units this year and approach 250,000 units.
According to the industry on the 11th, sales of compact SUVs by five domestic automakers from January to July this year reached 136,422 units. Maintaining an average monthly sales volume of 20,000 units, compact SUVs are closely trailing the mid-size SUVs, which hold the largest share in the SUV market.
It is analyzed that the explosive growth was driven by aggressive launches of new compact SUV models by each company, starting with Hyundai Motor Company's Venue and Kia Motors' Seltos in the second half of last year. In the first half of this year, models such as the Trailblazer, XM3, and Captur were launched consecutively. The number of compact SUV options, which was only five in 2016, has more than doubled this year. By company, Hyundai offers two compact SUV models: Venue and Kona; GM Korea has Trax and Trailblazer; Renault Samsung Motors has XM3 and Captur; SsangYong sells the Tivoli. Kia offers as many as four compact SUV models: Soul, Stonic, Niro, and Seltos.
Beyond simply strengthening the lineup, the performance has exceeded expectations. Since the beginning of this year, the Seltos ranks third in sales among all Kia models, following the K5 and Sorento. While the Niro, which previously led demand for compact SUVs within Kia, has slowed due to model aging, the Seltos has been defending its sales volume.
For GM Korea and Renault Samsung, compact SUVs have rapidly emerged as key models driving overall brand performance. The Trailblazer, which began full-scale deliveries in March, alone accounts for about one-quarter of GM Korea's cumulative sales through July, while the XM3 has consistently sold over 5,000 units monthly since its launch, playing a vital role in Renault Samsung's domestic sales.
On the other hand, as competition intensifies, SsangYong, which has not fully capitalized on the facelift effect of the Tivoli, is aiming for a rebound through limited edition model releases. After the 1,000 units of the Tivoli Limited Edition commemorating its 5th anniversary last month sold out, an additional 1,000 limited units will be sold.
Although the new model effects of the Seltos, XM3, and Trailblazer are gradually weakening, notable new model launches are expected in the second half of the year, so the popularity of compact SUVs is likely to continue. SsangYong is reintroducing the long-body version of the Tivoli, the Tivoli Air, and a facelifted model of Kia's Stonic is also anticipated. The Kona, which was the highest volume model in the compact SUV market until last year, is also scheduled for a facelift, raising expectations.

An industry official said, "With domestic compact SUV sales nearing 140,000 units through July, achieving 200,000 units by the end of the year is expected to be easy," adding, "Moreover, compact SUVs are being proactively equipped with various powertrains, including gasoline engines, which remain popular, and rapidly growing electric and hybrid options, so the upward trend is expected to continue."
